Fathering a Master: Conclusion

Although the work of Gianlorenzo Bernini does indeed stand distinguished from the work of both his contemporaries and predecessors, his genius was not entirely miraculous or without contribution. Pietro Bernini’s roles as teacher, artist, and father were vital in the artistic development of Gianlorenzo and the actualization of his potential. The sculpture of Pietro and his supportive involvement in the work of Gianlorenzo provided a foundation upon which he was able to mature as an artist into the Master of Baroque sculpture that he became.
